Statement from the Plan Z Team Regarding Today’s Death on the Rickenbacker

We are deeply saddened to learn that another member of our South Florida community has tragically lost his life, and another is still in critical condition, while cycling along Miami’s Rickenbacker Causeway today. Just a few months ago, we proposed a plan that calls for improved safety for joggers, cyclists and all who consider this stretch of land as their backyard. Our team has made great inroads with key Miami-Dade County  and State officials in helping to bring about awareness of this issue. However, we feel more needs to be done in a more timely and aggressive manner.

Therefore, today we ask that Miami Dade County and its Transportation Committee consider enacting the following:

1.    Lane reduction to two travel lanes in each direction between Bear Cut and the Powell Bridge.

2.    An immediate lane separation with a visual, reflective barrier for joggers, cyclists and drivers.

3.    Temporary flashing light indicators in each direction between Bear Cut to Powell Bridge during dusk and dawn hours.

4.    A commitment to the goals and objectives of and a swift turnaround of a pilot project that will immediately increase road safety for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
